Tweeters,

Just a little update from the Des Moines Marina area. Now that I have moved
from Magnolia to the beach, we still have the Starlings, White-crowned
Sparrows, House Sparrows, House Finches and Swallows galore, but there are a
few others that are obviously better suited to a beach than a lawn!

Last month it was all about the Brants until they moved on. This week, we
had the Common Terns begin to show up and hang around the beach. It started
with just two on Monday and today we now have three. They seem to be a bit
intolerant of the resident Belted Kingfisher, and hassle it on a regular
basis. I have never noticed that before in the years that I have been
visiting this beach when coming down to do on-site work, but maybe I never
timed it correctly.

While walking along the beach today at low tide with my dog tied firmly to
my waist, I was able to get some fun pictures of the Belted Kingfisher as it
flew over to a nearby tree to check us out as well as some of the Common
Terns (as much as they would allow us to get within range).

I have posted some new photos of the Terns and Kingfisher here:

Enjoy,
Whitney H.
