The "Chinook Observer" newspaper reports 50 degree sea temperatures and
abundant sardines off Clatsop Co., OR and Pacific Co., WA.

It also predicts that the tuna water will be as close as 15 miles off shore
by June 14.

A friend in the Santa Barbara area saw a Horned Puffin from shore in the
last few days. Up to 20 of that species have been seen from shore in recent
days from the central California coast. This friend reports that there is
unusually cold and productive water near shore from northern Santa Barbara
County to the north, and close in warm water beyond it. The theory is that
the Horned Puffins are being forced close in to the restricted zone of cold
water.

Northwest birders might find it advantageous to get off shore or conduct sea
watches in the developing conditions. There may be more to enjoy than just
the puffins.
