This weekend I spent Friday night camping and birding the Robinson Canyon area near Ellensburg, Saturday morning birding around Vantage and the Old Vantage Highway, and Saturday afternoon / early evening in the Wenas area. After hearing Tom Aversa's message on the WOS hotline last week about a BLACK-THROATED SPARROW near Wanapum State Park, I decided to make this one of my first stops. I stopped in Vantage early Saturday morning and headed south on the Huntzinger Road about 2 1/2 miles to the park. I had one singing bird .8 mile south of the park entrance along Huntzinger Road, and another .9 mile north of the park, also along Huntzinger Road (this is near the site where one was located last year).
My plan was to camp out Saturday evening at Wenas and look for Flammulated Owl, since Bill Shelmerdine had posted sitings at this spot last weekend, but decided to forgo this and headed back to Ballard a day early. Highlights of my trip were:
GOLDEN EAGLE - Robinson Canyon
LEWIS WOODPECKER - Umtanum-Wenas Road near Ellensburg Pass
RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER - Wenas Campground
BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD - Along the Audubon / N Wenas Road
GRAY FLYCATCHER - Wenas Campground
SAGE THRASHER - Old Vantage Highway MP 14.4
TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE - Robinson Canyon
SAGE SPARROW - Old Vantage Highway MP 20
BREWER'S SPARROW - Along Umtanum Road
WHITE-THROATED SWIFT - Ginkgo State Park
CHUCKAR - Old Vantage Highway MP 24
WILSON'S SNIPE - in fields just before entering Robinson Canyon
VEERY - numerous calling at Wenas Campground
LARK SPARROW - Huntzinger Road
CASSIN'S FINCH - Wenas Campground, and along Umtanum Road near Ellensburg Pass
SOOTY? GROUSE - heard calling at Wenas Campground
Cheers and Good Birding;
