On the Port Townsend/ Keystone Ferry about 2/3rds of
the way to Keystone there were large numbers of
Rhinocerous Auklets today along a riptide along the
tidal convergence zone, (whatever that is, if you've
taken this ferry you know what I mean). There were
probably upwards of five hundred birds stretching west
and north into the strait of juan de fuca. Mixed in
with these birds were large numbers of "olympic"
Gulls, mostly good Glaucous-winged, 9 Marbled
Murrelets in the vicinity of the ferry, a smatering of
Common Murres and a pair of Ancient Murrelets. From
co-workers on the coast they have been seeing Ancients
with common frequency in the waters off of La Push in
the last month.
We also had good numbers of Marbled Murrelets on
the East side of Camano Island and the waters around
Gedney Island today. Thanks for all the postings
about the feeder problems, Don't have one personally
but I told several friends about it and they have
since stopped, and had had incidents with Pine Siskens
and Black-headed Grosbeaks.,
