Hi Tweets,

I monitor reproductive success of cavity nesting birds, namely Hairy and
White-headed Woodpeckers, Northern Flickers, and Western Bluebirds (not in
bird houses). Once woodpeckers leave the cavity and "fledge" they do not
return, not even to roost. In fact, in certain areas were cavities are
scarce, Western Bluebirds move into a Hairy or White-headed Woodpecker
cavity literally the day after the woodpeckers fledge, with eggs starting to
be laid as soon as seven days post fledging. I have also not observed
bluebirds returning to the cavity after they fledge. This is from a data
set of about 250 cavity nests.
