Hey All,
On our way to Whibey Island this morning from the
Port Townsend ferry there were thousands of alcids. I
"counted" 2350 birds strung out within a thousand
meters of the ferry. I estimated 10 percent of these
birds to be Pigeon Guillemots and the rest more or
less Rhinoceros Auklets. We had two fly by Ancient
Murrelets and 5 Marbled Murrelets on the water and
calling as well. We looked for Puffins to no avail.
During the afternoon crossing there were still
good numbers but a little more spread out. I was in
the cabin with food poisoning, but went outside to
check out some Heerman's Gulls, my first in the sound
this summer, and saw two Tufted Puffins, both holding
fish. I got to show them to some onlookers who were
quite excited. Hope this isn't getting tiring,
