Subject: [Tweeters] Single Common Nighthawk flying and calling over North

Around 9 p.m. tonight while on a walk near home in the North End of
Tacoma Natalie and I heard and saw a single Common Nighthawk flying high
in the sky toward the west. I know these birds pass over many parts of
Western Washington every summer, but timing is everything when it comes
to spotting or hearing them.
While the nighthawk sighting was exciting, notably absent in the
neighborhood this summer are Vaux's Swifts. I am not sure if it is due
to the number of large, hollowed trees that fell during the storms over
the winter or some other factor, but there is a real shift in the number
of swifts in my urban setting this year.
Happy birding!
