One question that has occurred to me while out birding is how to tell if you
are on private property that is in the midst of, or adjacent to, national forest
land. Many public forests are checkerboard-patterned with private land.
Unless its posted, there isn't really any way to recognize private land
and a perfectly respectful birder may easily find themselves walking a
few extra steps form public land to private land.

That can easily happen in the area north of Ellensburg where Kittitas's
Reecer Creek is. I can understand the public being bothered by many
things we birders do (blocking driveways, stopping in the road, etc.) but
walking on what reason (though perhaps faulty reason, I know) tells
you is public land shouldn't be a cause for active hostility.
