i had the wonderful opportunity to finally observe Red breasted sapsucker sap sites being used by hummingbirds. The sapsucker male and female, and one fledged youngster had created a group of drilled sites on a sitka willow in a salmonberry wetland area near Lake Joy..east of the Stillwater site. They had pecked out about 8-10 large willow branches separated about 20 feet apart, and there was a profusion of hummingbirds, primarily rufous females and immature males as far as i could ID. There were also lorquin's admirals (Vanessa lorquini) butterflies feeding on the sap, and were harrassed by bald faced hornets. There were native bees also on the sap. Some of the humminbirds were territorial, I assume males. I still however have not been able to document more than one Rufous and one Anna's hummingbird nests this year...One was fairly high up in the canopy.

Any leads to an active rufous or anna's nest would be helpful. I did receive a couple responses, but the young were already fledged. Thanks.
