Today shortly after 5:00 a male Red Crossbill landed on the Black Sunflower
feeder in our yard in Port Townsend, followed by an immature and shortly
after that an adult female. The male fed steadily while the female kept
watch on top of the feeder. The male occasionally fed the immature as it
tried to figure out the squirrel-proof mechanics of the feeder. All three
stayed on the feeder for about 10 minutes. The female left first followed
by the immature, then the male. We neither saw nor heard any other
crossbills in the neighborhood and this is the first time we?ve seen them in
this area (or at all for that matter ? a life bird for us).
