I spent the day Friday in Stevens County. It was 6 degrees (yes!) at 7:30 am
in Chewelah.



Here are the highlights that provided for a fun day. At the Chewelah Golf
course (on the corner of Golf Course and Hogan Way), I found three species
of nuthatches and two chickadees, hairy and downy woodpeckers, Pine Siskins
(scarce this year), Am Goldfinches, and several flocks of Common Redpolls
wit one HOARY REDPOLL mixed in. This is only the second time I had ever seen
this bird.



Beyond the Golf Course on Sand Canyon Rd, I found a Northern Pygmy Owl, a
Gray Jay, and Chestnut Backed Chickadees, and an Evening Grosbeak.



At the Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge, there was a large flock
of Clark's Nutcrackers, a pair of WHITE HEADED WOODPECKERS, and a very
cooperative Merlin.



Later, I found two male Redheads swimming with a flock of Common Goldeneyes
at the Kettle Falls Marina. One N Saw Whet Owl responded to calling after
dark near Springdale.
