Oh! Good call Gene. I had totally forgot (until I read your post) that I had
removed some of the blue from the picture. Here are the same birds in the
unfixed" picture... (I am such a rookie!) I think the beaks could be that
greenish yellow rather then black. I'm still not sure what they are, but
save your nose Gene, what are the chances someone like me could spot
something unusual? They have to be something common, I just don't know what
because of my gull ignorance.

Rather bizarre-looking gulls. Brien Meilleur and I have been puzzling over
them and the closest match might be winter adult Kamchatka Common/Mew Gulls,
except the bills should be yellow and the mantle not so black. However,
given the bright snow contrast the image could be overexposed. We inclined
to make a run up to Everett to see if they might still be there.

It was cold with the window down and the smell was... well, you know what it
smells like out by the lagoons on the way to Spencer Island.



We saw these guys in the snow, rolled down the window and took their picture
then went speeding off for fresher air. When a friend back east asked me
what kind of birds they are, I realized that I was stumped by the black
beaks and the dove like faces. The bird on the far left could have a lighter
beak.



I have to admit that beyond Thayer's, California, and Glaucous I just don't
know enough about gulls to know what to call these. Even at that I still
need to look in a book to see who has pink feet and whose are yellow, which
has the spot on its beak and who has the rings. So could you be kind to a
poor girl and help me out here?
