I got out for the first time locally since I returned from Arizona. Judy
Mullally and I saw two first year Heerman's Gulls together at Ediz Hook.
This is highly unusual for us in March. Very few gulls there otherwise.
There were 13 Sanderlings and one Black Turnstone where the man feeds the
House Sparrows. There were more gulls near there than any log raft but I
never saw any gulls feeding on the bird seed.
At the mouth of the Elwha, there were only about 60 gulla and only two
were Thayer's. An immature and an adult. I gather this is their departure
time for the arctic. We did see two male Black Scoters off the east beach
and at the Elwha Fish Hatchery we did have one American Dipper winking its
white eyelid at us.
We ran in to Bill Schelmerdine at the Elwha Dike. It was nice to meet
him.
We felt that the winter birds were leaving and the Spring Birds weren't
in yet.
