Hello All,
Yesterday MerryLynn and I headed out to the Walla Walla River delta to see
what species early spring had deposited on the mud flats. There was no mud
exposed but there were a lot of birds and birders. We ran into the Pendleton
Birding Club fieldtrip-a very nice group of folks. Birds of note we saw in
no particular order.........
Canvasback..........600 birds off the south delta area
Greater Scaup......425 birds " " "
Common Goldeneye...200 birds-this is the largest number we have ever seen
off the WWRdelta. All the males were displaying and giving a night hawk type
call.
Bald Eagle............28 birds, one all black with a dusty gray head and a
black mask through the eyes. Only saw two adults.
Dunlin....................29 birds on the WWRdelta
Great Horned Owl..6 birds at three separate nests
Barn Owl..................3 birds in two different cutbanks
Northern Saw-whet Owl...1 bird at Fish Hook Park
Snow Goose..............1 bird at McNary NWR
Greater White-fronted Geese....1500 birds at MP 300 along HWY 12 & on Casey
Pond, McNary NWR. This is the largest known annual flock in southeastern
Washington.
Common Loon .......1 bird above Ice Harbor Dam
Glaucous Gull..........1 ad. bird on the poop piles along HWY12
Glaucous-winged Gull......12 birds on the poop piles.
