I was out today at Wallace Falls State park with a group of students. We
were perched on some rocks alongside the river, and the students had a
journaling assignment to close their eyes. listen then describe what they
hear. Just as the kids closed their eyes a dipper burst into full song. The
eyes all popped open, heads turned, and there he was, very companionably
close, bouncing and belting out his song. Typically I get a bunch of
questions about such things but this little singer had us entranced and we
all just watched and listened to the fine performance. As if that was not
enough, it then hopped into the flowing water, then popped out upstream for
an encore. After the bird headed upstream heads were down and pens were
flying and I got some of the best journal entries of the year. What a
glorious, spring experience.
