Guess I'm the only one on Tuesday that saw the Northern Shrike at Vance Co.
Park. Just after meeting the Sullivans I trolled by the western ponds
looking for the redheads (found them at the eastern pond). I saw a bird
flailing in the air much like a warbler when taking insects but this bird
was quite a bit larger. It straightened out its flying and landed in a tree
by the pond on the south side of the road just west of the restroom area at
Vance Co. park. The bird had a large bumblebee in its bill and as it tried
to manipulate it the bee fell to the ground. The shrike worked its way down
and out of sight. After about 10 seconds it reappeared without its former
food item. It sat in the tree, about 5 yards away, for quite awhile
allowing me great views of it. From its larger bill I am sure it was a
northern shrike. It lingered while I left. It may still be around so good
hunting.
