Subject: [Tweeters] An eagle and redtail exchange pleasantries

This afternoon, in a stiff cold March wind in Monroe, while hanging out at
Lake Tye a Bald Eagle flew in from the west and landed on its usual and
accustomed utility pole perch near the lake. No sooner did it land than a
redtail came out of the trees to the north and made a beeline...err.
hawkline towards the perched eagle. When the hawk got about 200 feet, the
eagle started talking trash, and the hawk gave it right back. To my
astonishment the hawk did not break its path in the slightest, and in this
game of err...chicken.... the Eagle balked, and right before the hawk would
have theoretically smacked it, the Eagle lifted off, yelling still, and flew
south down the lake. The hawk pulled up, circled once then headed back
north, victorious. Later I saw the same eagle at the south end of the lake
and as we (myself and a couple of students) approached it, it started
calling. There was nobody else around and so we hypothesized it was
explaining to us who witnessed its unseemly departure, that it really was
not a wimp......Then one of my students looked brightly and said, well, I
guess even Eagles can have a bad day.
