Hi Tweets:
I saw and heard several Yellow-rumped Warblers along my 1 mile walk here in
Des Moines yesterday. We ordinarily just have very few here in winter, and
most of those are not along my walk. In winter I only see Audubon's
Yel-rmped. Yesterday there was a Myrtle's in with them. I don't know if
you could call this migration, as the Yel-rmped Warblers should be in
California about now. I guess you could call it a movement for lack of a
better term?
The formerly very-loud and numerous Bewick's Wrens are pretty quiet, so I
suspect they are nesting. A few Band-tailed Pigeons are in Des Moines, and
have been here all winter.
The morning bird song is building to an almost dawn chorus. On my walk
about 10am, I'm finding it hard to distinguish all the trills I'm hearing
including Dark-eyed Juncos, Ruby-crned Kinglets, Spotted Towhee, and even
Black-capped Chickadees which are coming up with all kinds of calls and
songs.
Hmmm. Maybe I should review my many bird tapes. Unfortunately, my ears
will never rival young birders' hearing. Charlie Wright can distinguish the
difference in calls between Myrtle's and Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warblers.
Sheesh, it's not fair...
Yours, Carol Schulz
