while i suppose some might argue with stewart's initial approach regarding
4-letter abbreviations (which may be, i suppose, 4 letter words), in my
judgment his point is well taken. nobody would submit an article for
publication using abbreviations. the point, i thought, of this list is to
share information, not secret passwords or diagrams of how to get to the
fort. aou abbreviations are for checklist submissions and fieldnote taking,
not communicating with the rest of the world. i, for one, have no intention
of trying to memorize a list of abbreviations. if one feels compelled to
use abbreviations, then the words they represent should appear with, or
immediately prior to, the real words. this includes the subject line. imo.
