Subject: [Tweeters] 4 letter abbreviations not so great for new birders

I agree Nancy. Although I do get tired of complaints about the codes, as long as the full name of the bird is there, great. Steve Mlodinow did the wrong thing in leaving out the name of Lesser Black-backed Gull. Had he put that somewhere in the body of the email, to my understanding of the previous "understandings" we birders generally seem to come to every year when this damn issue comes up, it would have been fine. We can send the link I sent yesterday for folks who want to learn a new way of dealing with bird data, but we still should write out the name of the bird at least once (Note - I am not a moderator, just one of many folks with an opinion on this issue).

By the way, I am currently in SE Arizona, and would like to mention that I saw Curve-billed Thrasher and Pyrrhuloxia today, and I also heard Elegant Trogons croaking!! Life birds everywhere down here!! Cheers!

I've been coming to this form for over a year now, and have learned so much.
But, having followed the "4 letter abbreviation" discussion the last day or
so, I was dismayed at the latest post that not once contains the bird's full
name, but instead is referred to as LBBG.

I humbly suggest that for the newer birders who are coming to this forum
(and I send people myself here through my blog), please use the full names,
so we, too, may continue to enjoy reading the posts.
