Hi Tweeters, I had not seen any reports from my area of the state so thought
I'd site what birds have arrived in our neck of the backwoods here. We live
on a ranch and over the years been trying to attract various birds not seen
here before, esp the Gold finch, as strange as that might sound in the 28yrs
of being here until we put out 2 Finch socks last year and attracted 2
lovely pair, none had been spotted here. They are already here now too! So
are the house finch. No Robins yet, waiting on the green swallows, they make
a big display of their arrival, can't be missed esp if one is outside, they
like to dive bomb you, rather funny! Then it's the fight over who gets what
bird house. Hummers are always last here. We have the winter residents of
chickadee and nuthatch and Juncos are here now too as are the cowpens. They
like to ride piggy back on our burros all summer long. Originally from
Texas, I miss some birds, like the gulls, but oddly, we do have some that
hang around town, at the feed store esp too and the bridge over Pend Oreille
river so when we hit town we can see them, quite a number. Not sure how they
ever got here unless they followed the river from the west coast. Saw my
first bluebird too and that is a never before seen site here too, so picked
up some mealy worms and a container at the feed store and some fruit and
hope to keep them around. Canadian geese came in the hundreds, our pasture
looked like a big black dotted landscape with them and a lone pair of
Mallards that have been coming to the pond for many years now. We have the
natives here all winter too on the river as well as the Osprey of course and
Bald Eagles. Did catch site of Snow geese flying high overhead about 10 of
them headed northeast. The lone Blue Heron stopped by too for awhile and
also heard his call this am, very distinct. All for now
