ID seems quite probable, but can't say as I have strong cred in immature
raptor fine points. Too big for Sharp-shinned, another visibly-similar
candidate, as this guy was a good deal larger than Northern Flicker.

We got to enjoy close-ups of this lovely bird preening and fluffing for at
least ten minutes around noon. He was perched in neighbor's tree actually
below our sightline and about 40 yards away. A crow made a couple exploratory
passes, but otherwise it was like Silent Spring until Mr. Hawk departed. His
exit involved a high-speed dash through our yard at not much more than 10'
above the ground. Could have been interesting if our small spaniels had been
out there. The usual finches, juncos, crows, robins, et al are now timidly
returning to the feeders.
