Sunday March 25, 2007:
A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was seen in Kildonan 25 miles down the Port Alberni
inlet. The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS have been coming to this location for the
last ten years.
Twelve TRUMPETER SWANS were seen in the far fields at Ugly Dwarf Meadows
near the ESSO gas station at Nanoose Bay. TURKEY VULTURES, VIOLET GREEN
SWALLOWS and two TRUMPETER SWANS were seen above Corfield Street in
Parksville. A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was seen at feeders in the 100 block of
Meridian Way in Parksville.
The Sunday Bird Walk went to Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo. Twenty-five
birders found the following forty-five species:
PIED-BILLED GREBE, GREAT BLUE HERON, CANADA GOOSE, MALLARD, RING-NECKED
DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD, HOODED MERGANSER, COMMON MERGANSER, COOPER'S HAWK,
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, BALD EAGLE, TURKEY VULTURE, AMERICAN COOT, AMERICAN
BITTERN, GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, ROCK PIGEON, NORTHERN FLICKER, STELLER'S
JAY,NORTHWESTERN CROW, COMMON RAVEN, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE,
BUSHTIT,(YELLOW-EYED BUSHTIT), BROWN CREEPER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, HUTTON'S
VIREO, MARSH WREN, BEWICK'S WREN, AMERICAN ROBIN, CEDAR WAXWING, VARIED
THRUSH, HERMIT THRUSH, VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS, TREE SWALLOWS, YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER, EUROPEAN STARLING, SPOTTED TOWHEE, SONG SPARROW, GOLDEN-CROWNED
SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, HOUSE FINCH, PURPLE FINCH,
PINE SISKIN, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and HOUSE SPARROW.

Saturday March 24:
Female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS were seen along Morello Road in Nanoose Bay.
Four female PEACOCKS have been sighted in the Highlands and Garnet Place
area off Rutherford Road in north Nanaimo

Wednesday March 21:
A BULLOCK'S ORIOLE has returned to a feeder in a yard just past the Little
Qualicum River.
A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was sighted at a feeder along Emma Way in Cedar.
The Wednesday Bird Walk went to the Little Qualicum River Estuary in
Qualicum Beach. We saw an estimated seven to ten thousand seabirds offshore
at the Viewing Tower at Qualicum Beach. 90% of the sea birds were SURF
SCOTERS with SCAUP, BLACK and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, GOLDENEYE, BUFFLEHEAD,
LONG-TAILED DUCKS and MERGANSERS making up the rest. Hugh amounts of GULLS
were also along the beach and offshore. One of the birders saw a PEREGRINE
FALCON catch a gull, while watching the gulls through his scope. Other
birders saw a BALD EAGLE catch a SCOTER. A TRUMPETER SWAN flew over the road
just in front of us on Highway 19a.
Eleven birders endured the strong and biting wind to find the following
forty-seven species:
CANADA GOOSE, BRANT, TRUMPETER SWAN, EURASIAN WIGEON, AMERICAN WIGEON,
MALLARD, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, GREATER SCAUP, LESSER SCAUP,
SURF SCOTER, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, BLACK SCOTER, LONG-TAILED DUCK,
BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, COMMON MERGANSER,
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE, BRANDT'S CORMORANT, BALD
EAGLE, PEREGRINE FALCON, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, KILLDEER, BLACK TURNSTONE,
DUNLIN, BONAPARTE'S GULL, RING-BILLED GULL, MEW GULL, CALIFORNIA GULL,
HERRING GULL, THAYER'S GULL, WESTERN GULL, GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, GLAUCOUS
GULL, NORTHERN FLICKER, NORTHWESTERN CROW, COMMON RAVEN, RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLET, AMERICAN ROBIN, EUROPEAN STARLING, SONG SPARROW, RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRD and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD.

Monday March 19:
Sixteen VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS were seen in the 2000 block of Cathers Drive
in Nanaimo.

Sunday March 18:
A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was seen in the 200 block of Dawkins Lane in Nanaimo.
