Subject: Please WRITE TO ANYONE you can think of to help STOP THIS!!!

Please check out these two websites and some of the letters of concern.
The supposed Outlying Landing Field will NOT stop jet noise in Virginia Beach - it is NOT required and will NOT be used for anything more than a place to refuel jets not a place to move the training lands and crash site as people in Virginia Beach are being lead to believe.

This is simply happening so the government doesn't have to address the encroachment issues around Oceana Air Field in Va Beach and possibly displace people who were never supposed to be allowed to build where the city let them build !! Not only will this affect the wildlife refuge in North Carolina but several thousand generational farmers.

Apparently the plan to rid the birds, swans, snow geese, etc is to poison them using chemicals on the plants they eat and then to go in and shoot the rest !!!! This is HORRIBLE not to mention Un necessary !!!
Please write to anyone you can think of (many many names are listed at the NOLF website) and oppose this!

Some Sample Letters .....

I am writing to express my strong objection to the U.S. Navy's plans to place a jet landing field directly next to the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Eastern North Carolina.

The landing field site being demanded by the Navy, Site C (Washington and Beaufort counties), would necessitate extreme measures to "manage" birds in and around the refuge in order to have any hope of ensuring safety for pilots using the area. As much as 20,000 acres of cropland that swans and geese routinely use for feeding would be eliminated. In addition, the Navy would have to employ harassment techniques, including shooting--and even poisoning--birds that arrive in the area seeking the safety of a wildlife refuge.

Nothing could be more contrary to the mission of a national wildlife refuge, which for 40 years has been attracting and protecting hundreds of thousands of winter waterfowl and millions of other birds, not to mention the bears and red wolves that make it so special. What a terrible and needless waste of public resources, considering that the Navy has excellent alternatives that they refuse to adequately explore.

The Navy has had more than ample opportunity to get the answer right and has failed. It is now time for those in North Carolina's congressional delegation to step forward, support our governor and our citizens, and require the Navy to abandon this plan and pursue an alternative site.

I urge you to act now, before the Navy becomes even more deeply entrenched in this decision that is bad for North Carolina. Thank you for all the efforts you make on this issue so important to North Carolinians and to our state's great natural heritage.

Dear Senator Webb,
I am writing this letter to follow-up my earlier call to strongly protest the construction of the unnecessary OLF (Outlying Landing Field) the Navy intends to build in Washington County, NC. The proposed site is within 3.5 miles of the globally significant Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, wintering grounds for over 100,000 waterfowl. The birds are protected by the International Migratory Bird Treaty. In order to make the site usable, the Navy will have to displace or destroy the protected migratory birds to reduce the possibility of collisions with jet aircraft. Homeowners, government wildlife experts, elected officials and many military experts agree this is the wrong site for the OLF. Senator, these days we are all too painfully aware of the consequences when elected officials refuse to listen to the experts.
Also, the primary reason behind building the OLF is jet-noise complaints in Virginia Beach. Oceana NAS was slated to close in the last BRAC round, due to encroachment issues. The solution to this problem lies entirely with local officials. If the city of Virginia Beach is not willing to address the Navy's concerns, the Master Jet Base should be moved, rather than building the OLF and causing an environmental catastrophe.
Senator Webb, I urge you to do everything in your power to deny funding for the building of the OLF.
