Colony Status at Kenmore WA and Availability of Forms for Monitoring

Don Norman asked that I relay the following information:

that I [Don Norman] checked the Kenmore colony and it looks pretty normal with an estimated 55 nests and a subsample of those showed almost all
incubating and 17 of 19 active.

I also wanted to let anyone who is interested in monitoring a heron
colony to email me for the protocols and data sheets for the following
aspects of colornial waterbird monitoring. The Heron Working Group
also has similar forms.

General visits
Disturbance
Colony mapping (nest tree mapping)
Productivity
Arrival and Departures (to help locate foraging areas)
Foraging Area observations

Typically there is a word file protocol and an excel file data sheet.
WDFW collects general information on colony status, ie active
successful, but does not have a way to collect more specific
information. Such information is critical for the protection of
sites.

Major marine foraging areas have been mapped by WDFW thru the PSAMP
program but additional foraging success information is needed to link
the use of these foraging areas to fisheries and shoreline use. I am
working on some protocols for handheld dataloggers, if anyone is
interested in looking at nesting and post nesting season foraging in
these sites, let me know and we can try and collect some info.
