Ha ha! I just couldn't help sticking my two cents worth, even tho I haven't been in Germany since 1978.

I had a site guide (in German) for West Germany, but I lost track of it years ago. Anyway, things change, what with development and all.

In the Frankfurt area, there is a refuge along the Rhein River south of there (a half day outing) called Kuhkopf (cow head). It's quite well known to Gerrman bird watchers. It's a good place for Nightengales (but get there early). It's bottomland woods and wetlands.

The Kinzig River that empties at Hanau into the Main River is a spring migration corridor.

There is or was a large pond SE of Frankfurt where I saw a few goodies. It's called Rheinheimer Teich, near Dieburg. Harriers, Stonechat, Red-backed Shrike, wetland warblers, etc.

Northern Bavaria has recommended birding sites, but I never got to them. Those were also wetland/small lakes type places. Over on the Czech border is another habitat altogether - forested hills.

But an up-to-date site guide is a must, even if in German. There are maps and illustrations to help.

OK, you all can delete this now.
