It was a quiet morning in the backyard forest in east Oly...then at 7:00 a.m. from all angles, a familiar song from long ago: "didiro, pidiro, pidiro, didiro (or something of the sort)". After my ears tracked their location, my eyes caught their movement. Honing in on the unmistakable contrasts of yellow, red, and black, the forest was suddenly ablaze in fiery winged foliage. An instant turned the once-ominous evergreens from winter to summer.

There is only excitement, and nothing sobering, when this moment of the year comes. I would have bought a round for all the folks on the trail, but there were no others. Next year on the morning of May 4th I'll remember to bring a six-pack, so mark the date. Until then, cyber-cheers to all, I saved some money and the Tanager is here again.
