Birding by Ear
with Bob Sundstrom, Professional Birding Tour Leader
This popular and practical class is back this spring in a format emphasizing intensive field experience. The class is designed to help you get a handle on bird songs and calls. The field trips will cover a wide variety of habitats within about 100 miles of Seattle. Intended for first time birding-by-ear students as well as those who would like an intensive refresher. There will be one evening introductory session plus three different full-day field trips. Registrants must sign up for each field trip separately and can only sign up for two total.

Physiology of Birds
with Kathleen Hunt, Ph.D
What's really going on under all those feathers? Birds have one of the
most beautifully designed bodies of any group of animals on earth.
They can survive levels of oxygen deprivation that would kill humans;
they have the most peculiar lung that has ever evolved; and they can
thrive everywhere from the Sahara to the Arctic, and even 500 meters
under the Antarctic Ocean. The birds include both the fastest athlete
on earth, and the best endurance athlete on earth. How exactly are
birds able to do all this? In this class you'll learn to appreciate
birds in a whole new way. Your instructor is a physiology and
ornithologist who did her Ph.D. on physiology of Arctic birds and now
teaches environmental physiology at UW.

Hummingbirds of Western Washington: Biology and Identification,
with Dan Harville
We will discuss the biology and natural history of hummingbirds and work on our identification skills. The field trip will be at a hummingbird banding site, with the opportunity to see hummingbirds in the hand. Dan Harville is one of a very small number of banders working with Rufous Hummingbirds on their breeding grounds.
