White-breasted Nuthatch Vs. Red-breasted Nuthatch:

Scott Murray most definately meant White-breasted
Nuthatch.

While most of us normally think of the White-breasted
Nuthatchas an Oak loving species, it also uses Oregon
Ash.

It is more unusual to see the Red-breasted Nuthatch on
the River "S" Unit. The White-breasted Nuthatch has
adapted to, expanded into, and nests in the Oregon Ash
woodlands there. Increasing over the years, it can be
seen there essentially year round now.

I haven't yet seen a response by Scott Murray to your
question
about the 3 White-breasted Nuthatches he reported
yesterday at
Ridgefield NWR.

However, having birded this area several times myself,
I can state
that White-breasted Nuthatch is much more likely to be
seen
along the River S Loop than Red-breasted, at least in
the
breeding season. I have seen them nearly every time
I've
birded the area, and I'm sure they breed nearby.

This is one of the few locations in western Washington
where
White-breasted Nuthatches are still a regular species.
(They
seem to have pretty much disappeared from Pierce and
Thurston
Counties.) However, the population around Ridgefield
is probably
continuous with the widespread population in the
Willamette Valley
of Oregon.
