Today after school my friends Jonathan, Collin, Luke, and my brother
Zack and I walked around Discovery for about two and a half hours. We
started out with a few warbling vireos and an olive-sided flycather.
Then we made our way down to the loop trail. Right before we started
on it we found our main highlight, which was a HERMIT WARBLER directly
across the street from the playground. We had great views of it along
with an orange-crowned warbler that was hanging around with the hermit
warbler. Around the same area we saw a few california quail. Almost
immediately after entering the loop trail we had awesome looks at a
male pileated woodpecker. We kept moving down the trail until we got
to the north bluff, where we found a beautiful Rufous hummingbird. We
eventually made our way down to the beach where we found a lone
western grebe and a bunch of stellers jays. Some other birds that we
found include: winter and bewick's wren; song, golden-crowned and
white-crowned sparrows; bald eagle, red-tailed hawk, goldfinches and
pine siskens.
