Hello all,
To get to the famous Tom Lamb Hummingbird crossing go east of Walla Walla on
Hwy 12 approx. 8 miles to Dixie. Turn right (south) on Biscuit Ridge road at
the large old schoolhouse. Go approx. 2 miles - it is a small house with
lots of hummingbird feeders around and a small sign that says Hummingbird
Crossing. There is a large dog "Duchess" that is very friendly. There is not
a lot of parking space - be sure to get off the road. Past the home on the
right is grass that is fine to park on if it is not muddy.
Tom Lamb welcomes birders anytime between May and Sept - the best time to be
there is the last two weeks of May in the evening - we have had over 200
hummers in his small yard at once. Rufous, Black-chinned and Calliope with
the occasional rare Broad-tailed.
There is a donation box to pay someone to keep up the feeders since Tom is
no longer able to. And he keeps a visitors log for you to sign.
If you go on up Biscuit Ridge road it turns to dirt and goes to the top of
the mountain - to the Green-tailed Towhee spot. There are lots of birds
along this road. Just past Tom Lamb's home is Seaman road that takes off to
the left - this is one of the best spots around to actually see Veery and
not just hear them - they sit on top bushes along the creek just past the
farmhouse on the left.
Hope this helps all those who have never been to this spot!
Good HummingBirding, MerryLynn
