Subject: Mystery Rail at Ridgefield on Sunday
From: "m_scatt AT yahoo.com" <m_scatt at yahoo.com>

Sunday morning we were walking on the Kiwa Trail at
Ridgefield and we flushed a dark rail at a distance of
about six feet. It was on the northern section of
trail in area with willows. It had been swimming (with
its back toward us) in some shallow water with dense
grassy vegetation. It flew almost immediately and we
positively saw fairly large white secondaries. When it
landed and disappeared into the thick vegetation we
heard it. It was a fairly rapid ticking...each note
was short...like a staccato "tet tet tet'' with
varying intervals between the notes. It continuously
repeated the same notes at the same pitch without
adding different sounds. It seemed somewhat smaller
than a Virginia Rail. We are used to the call and
appearance of both Sora and
Virginia Rail but have never had good looks of either
while in flight. It
didn't sound like Virginia Rails or Soras that we have
heard in the past.
