As soon I as read the Sullivan's report about the Acorn Woodpecker this evening, I jumped in my car and went to look for it. I arrived on scene at about 7:10pm and found the bird about 10 minutes later. It was in a small cluster of oak trees next to Elma Gate Road East. After returning from my car to get my camera the bird flew back into the trees to the north and I lost it. I then searched for awhile from both the Blockhouse Rd. and Elma Gate Road sides. Luckily, I refound it pecking away on a short stubby branch of an oak tree further back from the road. Here I got to take a few pictures that turned out pretty bad. Its a beautiful bird to watch! A life bird for me as well. Thank you to the Sullivan's for finding and reporting it. Hopefully more birders will get to see it. That part of Grays Harbor county definitely an under-birded area which holds great potential. Also of note, there were many Western Tanagers in all the trees at the same location this
evening.
