When I was growing up next to Schmitz Park in West Seattle during the '60s
and '70s, CALIFORNIA QUAIL were very common in the ravine adjacent to our
house. I used to call to them and they'd answer me, and they could often be
seen skittering around in the bushes. By the '80s, they seemed to have
vanished. But in just the last couple weeks, my mother and nephew have
seen/heard them at least twice, calling down in the ravine and walking across
the driveway. So they seem to be making a comeback!

My mother also saw a WESTERN TANAGER in the ravine yesterday.

Cheers,

Subject: [Tweeters] California Quail, West Seattle

Greetings to all and happy Mother's Day!

Just saw a California Quail on my neighbor's rooftop here by Lincoln Park in
West Seattle. Although the species is listed as a common lowland Puget Sound
resident in my guidebooks, I've never before seen one in West Seattle in +/-
10 years of observing. Are they actually that common and I've simply missed
them?

And while I'm emailing - when I lived by Green Lake, I saw goldfinches
regularly. This is another species I've never seen in Lincoln Park. I do tend
to hang out in the same parts of the park most of the time, so I may be just
not looking in the right habitat. Has anyone seen goldfinches in this part of
West Seattle, and if so, where?

Good birding,
Trileigh Tucker
