Here's an update on the reintroduction of Western Bluebirds onto San Juan Island.

We released 8 pairs (16 birds) of WEBL's in March in San Juan Valley on SJI.
Several pairs were sighted 2-3 weeks post-release; one pair in particular
was seen entering nest boxes on the south end of SJI for a week or so.
Initially we were quite hopeful that this pair may be nesting but they have
subsequently disappeared. Although we have not had any sightings in the
last 3-4 weeks, we remain hopeful that the birds are still in the area (we
are not tracking them by any other means than visual observation at this
point). I did receive a recent report that one pair has returned to Ft.
Lewis. We will continue to search for the birds throughout the nesting
season (through end of June, early July) and will likely expand our searches
to other islands as well.

Hi Kathleen,
I was given your name as someone who might be able to update me on the
bluebird reintroduction on San Juan Island. How are things going this
spring? Do you have any nesting birds? Also, could I post your response to
the local birding listserve?
