Subject: Common Loon shot at Beth Lake
Dan and I were notified by the USFS that a common loon was shot at Beth Lake. We were at the necropsy and the loon was shot in the head. This was most likely the female and a hopeful new territorial pair for the low numbers of nesting common loons in WA. We looked for the other loon, but was not able to locate it. This is a tragedy for the loons in WA, especially since it takes 5-9 years before loons become mature enough to mate and nest. I believe there will be a reward for any information leading to the arrest/conviction of individual/s involved.
