Hi Tweets,

Heather and I spent Memorial Day weekend at the Flying 'L' Ranch in
Glenwood, WA just south of Mount Adams in NW Klickitat County. The Flying
'L' is set in Ponderosa & Lodgepole Pine with killer views of Mount Adams.
It is not really a ranch, but rather a low key resort, complete with
communal kitchens for dinner, wonderful breakfasts provided in the lodge
and lots of bird feeders. It makes for a wonderful base of operations.

It was quite wonderful to sit at a picnic table with a view of Mt. Adams
with sunflower feeders on one side and hummingbird feeders on the other
side:

Evening Grosbeaks
Black-headed Grosbeaks
Purple Finches (not Cassin's - even though Glenwood is east of the Cascade
Crest, it is a mixing zone biologically)
Red-breasted Sapsucker
Olive-sided Flycatcher
Lazuli Bunting

1 BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD - male (May 27th, 2007 6:30pm at 10')
4 Calliope Hummingbirds
2 Rufous Hummingbirds

Other news - the Flying L is for sale by the owners Jacquie Perry & Jeff
Berend, who've owned it the past 10 years.

TROUT LAKE NATURAL AREA PRESERVE:

This is a glorious spot located NW of Trout Lake and accessed via the Elk
Meadows RV park. The trail is an old logging road that is about 15' above
the Lake/marsh, so the viewing is just about perfect. Birds of interest:

Pied-billed Grebe - singing the most amazing song in addition to the normal
whoop - it was as if the bird was a jazz musician and 'bending' the notes
in new ways. It definitely got my attention
Sora
Hammond's & Pacific-slope Flycatcher
N Rough-winged Swallow - colony
Swainson's Thrush - singing
Warbling Vireo
Warblers - Yellow, Yellow-rumped, MacGillivray's, Com. Yellowthroat
Gray Catbird
Yellow-headed Blackbird

CONBOY NWR Saturday, May 26, 2007
2 Sandhill Cranes - adults about half way out along the marsh side of
Willard Springs trail
Northern Harrier
Sora
Hammond's Flycatcher - singing
Pygmy Nuthatch
Cassin's and Warbling Vireo
Red-winged & Yellow-headed Blackbirds

STINSON FLAT about 13 miles SE of Glenwood, fishing access. Across the road
is a jeep trail that ascends Grayback Ridge and made for a very nice hike
at this time of year.

Gray Flycatcher - singing
Vaux's Swift
Cassin's vireo
Warblers - Nashiville, Blk thr Gray, Wilson's
W Tanager
Lazuli Bunting

BALCH LAKE Monday, May 28, 2007

NO Acorn Woodpecker, but I spoke with a local that said they have moved
about 1/2 way up the hill from the original granary tree on the south side
of the road.
Ash-throated Flycatcher
Lesser Goldfinch
W. Scrub-Jay
Bullock's Oriole

Western Pond Turtle - 24

Directions to all of the locations (except the Flying L) can be found in
the ABA "A Birder's Guide to Washington".

Good Birding,
