That is interesting since I put up a section of a split log
attached to a board that I placed in a spot where Flickers were roosting
on the side of our cedar board and batten house. The flickers would peck
on the siding while roosting so I hoped the birds would peck on the log
instead. This log-board combination is attached to two battens on the
house which left a 3/4" space between the "roost" and the siding where
bats now reside. The flickers do use the perch in the winter as it is
wind protected and warmed by our brick chimney.
