Hi Tweets:
I talked to the Kent Ponds site mgr. today, about access to the AMERICAN TREE SPARROW
relocated at Kent Ponds by the census team yesterday. He gave birders permission to
walk inside an interior maintenance gate to view sparrows. He said he trusts the
birders to not charge all the way into the lagoon area. They are trying to protect
the waterbirds there from lots of disturbance. This interior gate is located in the
west meadow of Kent Ponds on a gravel maintenance road which comes into the west
meadow from Russell Road. It is about 1/2 way between the north parking lot on
Russell Rd (near the small park w/ the pine trees) and the main parking area on
Russell Rd near Van Doren's Landing Park. Take the interior trail from either
parking lot, and head toward the other lot. When you reach the gravel maintenance
road, turn east (away from Russell Rd). This will take you past a gate toward the
lagoon. There is a pile of wood chips, and some black planting pots near the lagoon.
You can approach fairly close to the woodpile area, but please STAY ON THE GRAVEL
ROAD and don't go all the way into where the woodpile is. The lagoon is right behind
that.
Many thanks to Kathy Andrich for writing about the census birds to Tweeters. An
article w/ two maps can be seen on the Rainier Audubon website at
http://www.rainieraudubon.org/kentponds.htm
The map does not show the gravel maintenance road coming in from an always closed
outer chain-link gate on Russell Rd. You need to walk to the area from the parking
lots. It is only a few blocks in.
The RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen at least 3 times yesterday about 1/2 way up a
sizable bare tree south of the Animal Shelter on 64th Ave. The tree is near the road
and is across 64th Ave from the Graebel Bldg.

Subject: [Tweeters] Kent Ponds Census, Red-shouldered Hawk,American Tree Sparrow

Hi Tweeters,

Yesterday the Kent Ponds Census team relocated both
the Red-shouldered Hawk and the American Tree Sparrow.

The Red-shouldered Hawk was near the King County
Animal Shelter in a large bare cottonwood tree and
seemed to always be attended by crows. He/she is
truly a stunning bird if he would only be more
cooperative in showing himself to folks.

The American Tree Sparrow was between the north tower
and the center tower. There is a trail off the main
trail that is fenced off to protect the resting
waterfowl but the bird could easily be seen from the
fence area looking towards the ponds, there is a wood
chip pile and some logs along the path. It was in
this general area. The sparrow flock is very active
and it could likely be found wherever the sparrows
are. Gorgeous bird and my first west side tree
sparrow.

We also saw 9 Western Meadowlarks in the same general
area as the American Tree Sparrow. A dark morph
Harlan's Hawk was in the field area but first was
chased off by crows then landed in the territory of
the southeastern Red-tailed Hawks who then promptly
sent it packing.

Oh and for Rachel, an immature Peregrine was spotted
on the powerline trail on a tower. I may have
misidentified last weeks as an adult. We were in the
midst of the Short-eared Owl/Harrier action last week
when the peregrine was noted.
