Subject: [Tweeters] City Birds are Tougher Than Country Birds (link)

Hello everyone,

the "guess the mystery bird" contest is coming along
nicely; there are three guesses made by quite a number
of people so far (maybe I should continue this mystery
bird feature for all BITN?). The guesses include; a
chough, a black-headed bulbul and one of the paradise
flycatchers species. I wish I had geographical data to
go with the image to help us narrow things down, but
alas, I do not.

I also have just published an article I wrote over the
looooong wifi-less weekend to share with you. This
piece focuses on a paper co-written by some local
scientists, including my dissertation advisor, John
Wingfield from the University of Washington. This
article compares urban and rural birds and finds
(perhaps not surprisingly to all of you) that the
urban birds are tougher than the rural birds;

I am writing another piece along the same lines that
will appear later today or tomorrow .. that will
include a discussion of some of my experiences with
breeding birds in captivity. Overall, I think this
piece raises some interesting conservation questions
that out to be made plain for our policy-makers with
regards to protecting endangered species.
