Hi Dennis and Tweets

I have been meaning to reply. Usually we have juncos nesting in our yard, and we did this year. The difference this year is that they are almost always around for the whole year. This year they disappeared in late summer sometime. I didn't see any until Sunday, the 6th of October, and then only two. I think this is the first year that they have not been around thru the summer.

Dennis, your post called to my attention that I had not been seeing the juncos at least since August (I was out of the country to China and Tibet in early September so that is a gap for this year).

Thanks for all the posts.

I asked about arriving juncos on October 3, when I decided they were late arriving in my yard. I've watched for them most days since, but no sighting until today, when I just saw a single male. Usually I have a flock of around a half-dozen birds, or at least that's the most I see at one time; there are probably more. This is October 11, my latest arrival date in 15 years of keeping records. From all the responses, it does seem as if juncos arrive at different times in different yards, in other words there isn't a big push over a few days that floods the lowlands with these birds. Several people sent me series of arrival dates from their yards, and I could find no pattern of earlier or later dates on different years. But people can certainly contribute interesting and possibly valuable information to our knowledge of birds by keeping track of such things. Now, with online entry points such as eBird for yard-bird sightings, that information can be compiled over large areas and indeed be of some value.

How about a Great Yard Bird Record Entry Effort?
