Hey Tweets,
I was wondering why Kathy called that Red-naped
Sapsucker a hybrid. She pointed out the lack of a
black collar between the red throat and the white
breast.
I did some surfing for pictures, and have gotten MORE
confused!! Is that Black collar a good field mark for
Red-Naped sapsucker?

Below are some links to some of the pictures I found.

What does everyone think??

Thanks!
Guy

Hmm. I wonder how good of a field mark that is?
I've been looking up some images on the internet.
Here are some Red-Naped (??) that looks just like this
one!

And here is a pic of what this guy calls a hybrid:

What other folks have called Red-naped/Red-breasted
hybrids have had more red on the head, where the
red-naped are Black. Many of the pictures of what
they are calling red-naped are missing that black
collar.

Hmm.. Need to consult my field guides when I get
home.

Female red-naped should have a white AND red area on
the throat, so I am figuring this one for a male ...

Get onto Flickr and search for red-naped sapsucker
pictures. There are a LOT out there! Very cool!
