I was able to see five Black-bellied Plovers today on the North end mud flat
of Rest Lake at the River "S" Unit of Ridgefield NWR. They were not in
their breeding plumage but could be identified easily by their black
axillaries (arm pits) when they flew. They were mixed in with about 50
Dowitchers. Other birds of note were a Blue-winged Teal, a few Lincoln's
Sparrows, and two Red-shouldered Hawks.
