I just dug out an old bird book titled: "A Pictorial Guide to the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent", 1983, and found what looks to be the mystery bird in question. It is a Black Bulbul (Hypsipetes madagascariensis). Found in tall, moist-deciduous forests. Himalayas; NE Hill Staes; Bangladesh; W Ghats complex south of Bombay; Sri Lanka.

I seem to recall that someone already IDed it as a Black-headed Bulbul. I don't know what the latest classification might be.
