Hi Folks:
I've got a few sightings from S King County for the past few days:
Oct 15, 3:30pm: My Des Moines neighborhood - a small MERLIN down at the end of 15th
Ave where the woods of Des Moines Creek Park starts. It was too dark in the
afternoon drizzle to tell the subspecies. It was perched at the top of a tall bare
tree.
Oct 17, 10:45am: Boeing Ponds - in the hydro-seeded field across from the ponds
there were several hundred CACKLING GEESE. In the northeast corner of that field
there were 4 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE.
Oct 19 (today) at 4:00pm: A HERMIT THRUSH (FOS = First of Season) in the leaf litter
in my backyard. This was one of the small variety, no larger than a Song Sparrow.
There are a few YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS in Des Moines near my neighborhood. They have
been foraging (and fly-catching) in birch and ash trees. It's very hard to tell
which sub-species some of these drab, brown, very-active warblers are. One was a
definite Audubon's. My ears can pick up the "chiff" to locate these birds, but
unlike the young birders, I cannot distinquish whether I'm hearing a "chiff" or a
"whit" to tell whether they are Audubon's or Myrtle Yellow-rumps.
Yours, Carol Schulz
