While out exploring some of the logging roads to the south of the town of Brooklyn in northeastern Pacific county, I heard the unmistakable call of a Gray Jay. Luckily, the bird flew into a tree close to me after I did a couple pygmy-owl toots to allow me a good look. My only other excitement around that area was a very close encounter with a crack of lightning.

I'm not sure if its a late date or not, but I also had a single Common Yellowthroat in the blackberries along the private lake south of Vance Creek county park on the way home. The west end of Wenzel Slough Rd. by its intersection with Keys Rd. has a sizeable gull flock now. They look like mainly Ring-billed, but I'm sure it won't be long until the bigger gulls start to show up.

Good birding,
