I spent all day today looking for a few year birds with some success.
I was able to add both WHITE-WINGED SCOTER (WWSC) and PACIFIC LOON (PALO)
to my year list. Both birds were observed on Banks Lake, albeit separated by
a good distance. The WWSC was located near the Alkeny WDFW Access area at
the and was visible from both the first boat launch and the dam. It seemed
to prefer the area around several small islands and was there in the morning
and again in the afternoon when I returned. The PALO was located south of
Steamboat Rock State Park where SR-155 is right along the lake.
Other birds of note included a single EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE at Northrup
Point Boat Launch/Rest Area, an immature GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW at Sun Lakes
State Park, two SURF SCOTER on Lake Lenore, two BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER at Soap
Lake's North Beach, and a first year MEW GULL at Soap Lake East Beach,
Records of interest included a late Great Egret at Alkali Lake, large
numbers of Bonaparte's Gulls (over 130 total), a late Lesser Yellowlegs at
Soap Lake North Beach, and a personal first record of Bewick's Wren at Sun
Lakes State Park.
In addition, large numbers of Horned Grebes were observed with over 100
tallied during the trip.
Disconcerting were the pallid counts of Common Loon with less than 40
tallied the entire day which is fewer than I usually see on Blue Lake this
time of year.
