Subject: [Tweeters] WA State Bird: Willow Goldfinch?

From: Andrea Wuenschel - chyroptera at yahoo.com
Looking at the cover of my voter's pamphlet for the
Nov 6th election, I see a the state bird of WA is
listed as the "Willow Goldfinch".
What, exactly, is a "Willow" goldfinch? Can anyone
tell me the origin of this name? Is it a subspecies of
the American Goldfinch? If not, why is our state bird
not called the "American Goldfinch"?
Thanks,
Andrea Wuenschel
North Seattle
