a foggy morning (Sunday, 10/28) at Ridgefield NWR
forced us to look close at the sparrows.
North side, on the road, with a group of GC Sparrows,
was a tan-stripe White-throated Sparrow.
On the south end of Rest lake, on the roadway, was a
single Lapland Longspur. I tried REALLY hard to make
it into a Smith's, but it was just the poor lighting
angle! ;)
The fog broke up just as we had to leave and revealed
a LOT of Cackling Geese. And we heard a lot of
Sandhill Cranes, but saw few.
Good looks at 3 sub-species of Cacklers, minima,
aleutian, and Richardson's (I think) all in one frame!
