Stay with me, friends -- I didn't know until very recently that these two
species hybridized. Just read a pertinent article by Kenn Kaufman (photos by
Brian Small) delineating the most positive differences between the two. The
magazine (Birder's World, Dec., 2007) shows a Jan. winter photo in CA: ". . .
the back stripe down the nape seems narrow, and the bill looks suspiciously
bright yellow." and "black feathering appears to extend just barely below
the eye. . . ". If we should see one of "these" . . . maybe just shrug and
record "grebe sp. " ? . . . on the other hand, . . . look again??
